"CrossFit makes me realize that I could do a lot of things that I never thought I could have done."

1.  TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

My name is Gookgik (GG). I am 28 years old and I was born and raised in Thailand. I have been doing CrossFit for about 1 year. I started to exercise when I was 16, doing yoga, fitness and boxing. I found myself enjoying lifting weights because I like the feeling of soreness. I was not fat during university years, but I realized my metabolic rate began to decrease as I can’t eat a lot anymore. I found working out helps me with my mood and sleep cycle.

GG

2. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START CROSSFIT?

My boyfriend, Amornsak who is in love with CrossFit, invited me to meet his CrossFit friends. A community that

every one shares the same passion and love talking about CrossFit. When I started doing CrossFit, I wanted to get lean and lose weight. Within 3 months, my body began to change, since then my new objective is to become healthier and stronger.

3. IF WE ASKED YOUR EVENING WOD CREW, HOW WOULD THEY DESCRIBE YOU?

In my opinion, I really like Arena’s atmosphere because here we are the community that we can hang out and workout at the same time. After a long day after work, it is always good to

see friends who share the same passion. I guess we get along well with each other and we always push each other forward. My coaches, Gap and Jar, they train people professionally; they have their own style of the friendliest/ best-atmosphere class! I really love going to evening classes because the schedule fits to me.

4. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT PEOPLE MAY BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOU?

I guess when my friends see me at different events and I dress up for parties, so they find it surprisingly when I dress for parties and dance with friends.

5. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?

I enjoy how I improve my performance for all Olympic lifts such as Clean, Snatch and Deadlift. I like how my coaches challenge

me by lifting heavier. It is the reason why I have self-discipline to go to the gym.

About the programming, I enjoy how it’s constantly varied. I always find the programs very fun and effective for my body. Although I exercise consistently 4 to 5 days a week but the programs give me the feeling of soreness. Moreover, the movements always challenge me to improve myself. The skills, techniques, and the amount of weight, these are the components which make CrossFit unique. For the coaches, I enjoy being their student because they know me very well and they always push me to improve my performance. Also, I enjoy their friendly personality.

8. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

My CrossFit goal is to look fit and firm so I can wear clothes confidently especially evening dresses. I was not confident to wear light jeans because my hip and upper body didn’t have the best balance. In time, my hips got a lot fitter and slimmer. My hips and my waist lost around 2 inches. I currently can wear light jeans confidently. However, my goal for next summer would be to be able to wear bikinis firmly - 5 more months.

Another goal is to inspire people around me to do things that they never thought they could do.

9. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER YOUR 1st WOD AT ARENA?

I thought Arena’s equipment is very new and clean. I really like the bathroom and the facility of Arena. Also I like the colorful competition plates.

6. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

My proudest CrossFit moment was when I did CrossFit Open 17.1. I never thought I could do it, but I actually completed the program and that changed my attitude about doing CrossFit. CrossFit inspires me to live my life believing to do things beyond my potential.

7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

My most favorite movement would be ‘Snatch’ because it is a whole-body lift and it’s fun to practice. My personal record is 42.5 kg. I have been practicing this movement more than a year. I knew even at the beginning that it will be my best movement.

My least favorite movement would be ‘Wallball’. Can’t stop thinking to drop it even I have many reps to finish.

10. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOU IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

There are two things which affected my life.

One of them is my physical look, my body transformed to be a better shape - fitter than before. My muscles grow evenly both upper and lower body.

Second impact is mental; I’m now confident wearing clothes. Also, I practiced my self-discipline and self-improvement. The effect of my performance makes me feel healthier and happier.

I don’t think I could get this kind of experience from any other kind of exercise.

11. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF?

I would recommend people to believe in getting strong instead of losing weight because muscle is heavier than fat. Looking fit and firm is more important than your weight. Lifting weight only makes your body stronger and healthier and also increases your metabolism rate, thus reduces the percentage of fat in your body.

12. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW TO CROSSFIT OR THINKING OF GIVING IT A TRY?

At first, I was afraid that I would get too bulky. Three months later, my body started to change and my motivation was how I improve my performance. I wanted to lift heavier and be able to do all CrossFit movement/lifts with a better technique. Since then, I could not stop doing CrossFit because it teaches me a lot about self-discipline and self-improvement. CrossFit makes me realize that I could do a lot of things that I never thought I could have done. It is the most powerful thing about

15. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE MAINSTREAM FITNESS ATTITUDE THAT BELIEVES WOMEN SHOULDN’T LIFT HEAVY WEIGHTS? OR IF SHE DOES, SHE WILL GET “BULKY”?

I used to think I would get bulky at first. Then I gave it a try and my body started to change. I got slimmer and fitter. From my experience, I became a person who wants to improve my performance. I lift around 30 to 60 kilograms depending on movements.

16. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

4 RFT

15 Snatches

200 Cal Row

17. HOW HAS CROSSFIT MADE YOU FEEL MORE PREPARED FOR THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?

I think CrossFit had prepared me to use functional movements. If zombies attack Bangkok, I would team up with my CrossFit friends and we’ll do the war plan to fight with them. I would drag them from ground floor to top floors and throw them off the building falling into the ground!

I would like take this opportunity to sincerely appreciate my supporters.

My boyfriend, Amornsak Monsereenusorn, who made me who I am today. He always inspires me and pushes me forward to improve my discipline and performance. He is a good example of a person who never gives up achieving goals (strictly on Olympic lifting- not cardio or gymnastic…..YUCK!).

CrossFit. It’s not only about how strong you are physically but also about your mental toughness. My CrossFit journey becomes an inspiration to apply in my daily routine such as work, friendship and family.

13. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?

The program surprises me everyday. The variety of workouts makes me want to go to the gym. The community of CrossFit gives me the feeling of good friends who always push me forward.

14. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HOW HAS IT CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED CROSSFIT?

I don’t control much about my diet. I eat clean food such as brown rice, fish, chicken, vegetables and steaks. My tips are:

1.   I only eat dessert on occasions

2.   I drink a lot of water

3.   7-8 hours of sleep

My coaches, Keerawat Srirungroungjit and Uracha Teerawanitsan, who are the best for workout programming. I love how professional they are to train their athletes and create fun around CrossFit WOD’s. It is a perfect combination.

My gym, CrossFit Arena, we have the best facility and Gokce who always takes care of her members. It is the most welcomed atmosphere.

Finally, I am proud of how far I have come. CrossFit has been teaching me to always aim higher and becoming a better version of myself: not only inside the gym but also outside. I hope I can inspire you to start doing something to make yourself better than yesterday. Thank you for your time reading till the end.

Don't fall for that princess look, this "debutante diva" is the politest badass of 18:00 crew..

Vava

1.  TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I am from Bangkok and used to live in NYC for 5 years for school and work. I am naturally skinny with a high metabolism. I grew up in Bangkok, where people believe that the perfect body type for women should be very skinny. I had a body that all my girlfriends wanted, so I didn’t see why I had to workout. That was totally wrong! I was a skinny fat person with almost zero muscular development. Now, I have been doing CrossFit since March 2013, five days a week. It’s much easier to stay motivated when you love what you’re doing. I look forward to training every day. But, it’s easy to feel discouraged sometimes, so I remind myself of all the progress I’ve made. My training pushes the boundaries of what I think I can do and seeing consistent progress is what keeps me hooked!

5. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?

CrossFit is about performing varied, functional movements that are applicable to real-life scenarios. But, it’s also about the community. Someone will finish a brutal workout and even if they’re exhausted and drenched in sweat, they turn around to continue cheering on their fellow classmate. Every class has a ‘no man left behind’ motto, where the class isn’t over until the last person has completed the workout. This solidarity is extremely powerful and helps build that strong aspect of community around every CrossFit gym.

6. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

My first pull up after one year of CrossFit and I survived the open workouts.

2. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START CROSSFIT?

My husband was trying so hard to make me workout, but I was never interested. One day, he told me about CrossFit and got so excited about it. He took me to a free trial class at CrossFit NYC, and it was a love at first wall ball. It challenged me, but was also varied enough to maintain interest. Every day was something new!

3. IF WE ASKED YOUR 6:00pm CLASS CREW, HOW WOULD THEY DESCRIBE YOU?

“Debutante diva with good form and always hungry before and after WOD” (from my husband J)

My crew would say I complain so much about the wod and always ask to scale down the movements. I thought the coaches might get confused if I ask them too many questions, but I never get away with it haha.

4. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT PEOPLE MAY BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOU?

I can eat a small snack or even a large meal five minutes before the wod starts and not puking in a super-intense wod (everybody should get used to it by now).

7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

My favorite movements are Clean & Double unders. I have so many least favorite movements or you can say I hate them! - deadlift, burpee, run.

8. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

Muscle up, I’ll get it one day before I retire from CrossFit.

9. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER YOUR 1st WOD AT ARENA?

Clean, new, and everyone was nice.

can do, but when you get them or you realize that you can do them. It is so empowering. CrossFit gives you a total body strength base that helps you to perform any kind of sport. One time, I was in a serious car accident on the NYS Thruway with my friends. I was sitting in the back, which had the most impact of car accident because the car was hit from the back and I didn’t wear a seatbelt. I was bumping back and forth 3-4 times. We were at the hospital for 2 days and two of my friends, who sat in the front with seatbelts on, had bruises all over their

10. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOU IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

The biggest impact is that CrossFit forces you to do things or movements that you don’t think you

bodies. They both had abdominal injuries and back & neck pain that sustained for a month. I had a stiff neck for two days, no bruise, and went back to CrossFit the next day. Comparing to my friends who had never worked out and had no core strength, the doctor believed that I didn’t have a serious injury as a result of my fitness level. This story shows how my strong body and muscles can protect me from a real-life scenario.

11. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF?

You only have one body and CrossFit is the best way to take care of yourself and enjoy a balanced health.

12. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW TO CROSSFIT OR THINKING OF GIVING IT A TRY?

The best part about CrossFit is that most workouts can take less than an hour, but the intensity is high enough that they’re incredibly efficient. You end up getting the results you want.  Just have an open mind and keep coming back, before you know it you feel sad if you miss a day.

13. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?

I had no background in sports before CrossFit. I was allergic to exercise and could not even walk fast. When I first started, I used only the training bar for a month. I was the worst in every class and always the last one who finished.

15. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE MAINSTREAM FITNESS ATTITUDE THAT BELIEVES WOMEN SHOULDN’T LIFT HEAVY WEIGHTS? OR IF SHE DOES, SHE WILL GET “BULKY”?

It is totally false and impossible for a woman to build muscle like a man. This is because males have much higher levels of testosterone than women, resulting in more muscle development. A woman who looks like she has muscles like a man has likely taken steroids! Or only with many YEARS of weights training, 5 hours a day, and a focus on a clean diet. Girls, stop asking me this question and worry about getting rid of your cellulite and sagging butt first!  As soon as my body adapted to CrossFit I was just a better version of myself. CrossFit makes you look lean and toned, creating a better shaped of you. You will never get bulk up overnight from weightlifting, except from an ice cream or beer overload.

14. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HOW HAS IT CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED CROSSFIT?

I eat 20,000 calories a day.

16. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

It would be a buffet wod with all colorful plates and everybody wears pink!

17. HOW HAS CROSSFIT MADE YOU FEEL MORE PREPARED FOR THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?

Zombies are allergic to protein shakes!

1.  TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I’m originally from Singapore and moved to Bangkok 7 months ago for an overseas assignment. 80% of me loves being out and about, discovering new experiences, new places and new faces, while the other 20% of me loves lazy days in bed with my breakfast tray and Netflix :)

2. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START CROSSFIT?

While I was on assignment in Jakarta, the 80% active side of me wanted to try something new, so I followed my friend to this crossfit thingy at the ‘box’ (hello Jaideep!)

3. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER YOUR 1st WOD AT ARENA?

Fun Fact – my first day in Bangkok was also the opening day of Crossfit Arena Bangkok! I was super excited to check the box out and it didn’t disappoint; the coaches were very welcoming and professional and the box is well equipped with the coolest gear. So my first wod at Arena was also the very first wod done by the box :P  oh look, I found a photo!

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?

Growing up, I was really terrible at sports and keeping up with my fitness (I couldn’t even do sit ups properly…) and could not understand how some people could find exercising enjoyable. I pretty much sucked during my first crossfit workout – couldn’t do a proper squat and was super unconditioned and unfit. I thought that was it and was ready to give up, but my coaches simplified the workout to accommodate my skill set. Once my skill set was refined, they encouraged me to make the workout harder so that I could get better. To me, that’s the best thing about crossfit – all the movements in the workout are adaptable to different individuals, which makes it an inclusive sport as everyone can do it.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

Definitely the first time I got upside-down to a handstand J I was practicing the progressions for a month and with every failed attempt, I was almost certain that I would never get there and wanted to just forget about it. But somehow one day, without thinking too much about it, I managed to get upside-down and that feeling was absolutely incredible!

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

My favourite movement/lift is the overhead squat/snatch respectively, because of how extensively they move and engage the various muscles in my body when executed. Least favourite are box jumps because I’m klutzy by nature and can probably count injuries for reps :(

7. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

Currently I’m working on perfect technique for each lift and movement, so that I can move efficiently and safely, and come back stronger the next day :)

8. WHAT IMPACT HAS ARENA CROSSFIT HAD ON YOU IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

It has enhanced my fitness capacity and made me happier as a person! That golden workout hour at the end of the day is the perfect physical remedy for those mind-numbing hours spent infront of the office computer :D

9. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF?

We only have one life to live, so live it well by ensuring your body is in good form.

10. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW TO CROSSFIT OR THINKING OF GIVING IT A TRY?

Don’t sweat it, literally! Every pro was once a beginner so don’t worry if you can’t finish your first workout or you don’t finish amongst the first – continuous training and practice will get you where you want to be.

11. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?

It comes with a strong Crossfit community that transcends geographical boundaries – it doesn’t matter which part of the world you’re in, passion for crossfit is the common denominator :)

12. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HOW HAS IT CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED CROSSFIT?

I used to drink a can of coke every because I needed the ‘energy’, but I stopped after crossfit because my workouts gave me all the energy I needed, yay!

13. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE MAINSTREAM FITNESS ATTITUDE THAT BELIEVES PEOPLE SHOULDN’T LIFT HEAVY WEIGHTS? OR IF THEY DO, THEY WILL GET “BULKY”?

Everyone is entitled to their own belief :) Personally, I believe in doing more of what makes you happy so if lifting weights is your happy pill, just do it!

14. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

Simple, yet effective workouts and right up my alley because anyone can do it and you can do it anywhere (even while travelling!)… so probably an AMRAP of air squats, push ups and v-ups.

15. HOW HAS CROSSFIT MADE YOU FEEL MORE PREPARED FOR THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?

It made me more self-aware so I would probably know if a zombie is creeping up on me o.O

FAST AND STRONG

TAM, PONRIT SOPON

1.  TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I work as a banker. My job usually deals with crunching numbers and analyze them to get some insight in order make some profit for the bank. Honestly, I have no background in sports at all. So, I understand how hard it is for anybody who starts CrossFit without any athletic background. Just keep holding on to it and results will come eventually.

2. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START CROSSFIT?

While I was doing my Master’s in the States. I felt like I was out of shape and was tired just climbing up stairs. So, I went on trying some globo gym but never feel like it was my thing. Unintentionally, I found a small gym near my place where they offered CrossFit class and I fell in love with it and keep on doing it until now.

3. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER YOUR 1st WOD AT ARENA?

My first WOD is half Cindy and I remember I used the thickest band ever. I barely finished the WOD and thinking that I just made a wrong choice trying CrossFit that day. After the WOD,  I went home, puked a little, fell asleep and woke up like 3 hours later with utter soreness..Anyway, I went back the next day tho.

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?

I think because it is not boring. Everyday you are doing the new things, new movements and trying to overcome your weakness little by little. Also, the community is great too. I really don’t like working alone and CrossFit helps me meet new people.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

It’s when I first get my muscle up. people were cheering on and I failed couple attempts before but eventually got it in the third try. Now, it is really my favorite movement because it is cool to be so high in the air.

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

Favorite: all Oly Lifts: Muscle ups

Not so Good at: HSPU, Chest-to -bar Pull ups --- but I never hate any of it tho.

7. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

I want to get better score in the Open …like Top500 in the Asia Regional maybe.   I try to work out more consistently and aim to build more muscle.

8. WHAT IMPACT HAS ARENA CROSSFIT HAD ON YOU IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

I find that working out with great people creates better atmosphere and pushes you harder than when you work out alone. Most of people at ARENA are nice and they are really good crew to hang out with not only in the class but also outside of the gym.

9. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF?

Keeping the level of fitness through physical activity along with good diet should be mandatory for everybody. It is not only for you but also for people who really care about you. It might be hard at first but you gotta be really persistence ,then it will become your routine and things will be easier.

10. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW TO CROSSFIT OR THINKING OF GIVING IT A TRY?

Well, try it first because you will never know whether it is your thing or not if you don’t try. Don’t expect to be really good in short time, too. It will take you a while to be able to do WOD as Rx but make sure you have the solid foundation first. Know your limit. plan your WOD accordingly. Know your own pace. Know your own weakness. learn from someone who is better than you and be humble.

11. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?

It’s more complex because there are various domains you need to focus on. It is not to be the best in one thing but rather to find where the optimal point  is.

12. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HOW HAS IT CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED CROSSFIT?

I focus more on eating less sugar these days and more protein. I’m not really into strict diet much, still have some cheat meals during weekend. I would say I am now eating with a purpose.

13.WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE MAINSTREAM FITNESS ATTITUDE THAT BELIEVES PEOPLE SHOULDN’T LIFT HEAVY WEIGHTS? OR IF THEY DO, THEY WILL GET “BULKY”?

I think it’s completely nonsense and those who believe that are mostly brainwashed by fitness advertisement. They don’t understand that strength can be measured through various parameters and physical appearance is not one of them. And I’m talking about like 80% of Thai people here that still believe that way. Anyway, things will change. We just keep on being ourselves and really should not care much about what they think.

 14. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

It would be like 15 minutes of running clock you do a chipper first and then the remaining time you do some bodyweight c&J or snatches. and you only count score of the latter part.

15. HOW HAS CROSSFIT MADE YOU FEEL MORE PREPARED FOR THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?

I would not run because that would not be a CrossFit thing.Instead, I would probably be able to rip their heads off right now because I am now really explosive as fu*k.

STRONG, DILIGENT, BEAUTIFUL, GENEROUS

TRACY ANDERSON

1.  TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I am a 35 year old Kiwi (NZ) mum of one and wife of Victor.  Before moving to Thailand I was the Centre Manager of an Early Childhood Education Centre.  I grew up in Auckland, New Zealand surrounded by grass, trees and beautiful beaches.  I moved to Thailand with my family just over a year ago as Victor became the South East Asia Regional Manager for T&G.  I have been doing CrossFit for 2 years and I am loving it so much, it has built me into a more confident, less stressed person.

2. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START CROSSFIT?

I had a group of local (NZ) exercising ladies who were raving about it, and I had just lost quite a bit of weight and needed to get some muscles, so I gave it a try.

3. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER YOUR 1st WOD AT ARENA?

I knew I was in the right place, the friendly coaches, enthusiastic owners and welcoming CrossFit box.  I just knew I could continue my fitness journey there.

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?

Everything!  The way it makes you feel absolutely awesome after finishing a big WOD, or making a good lift, the way everyone is so friendly and the people!

5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

Completing my first open this year (and doing it Rx), with that I got my first Chest to Bar!

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

So hard to choose!  Maybe Squat Cleans, they used to scare me so I did them so much I love them now.

Least favorite - Muscle ups - maybe one day I’ll get one, but for now I just pretend I don’t like them.

7. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

I wrote a list of goals at the beginning of the year.  I wanted to compete in the CrossFit open, I did that.  I wanted to do the Asia Champs Qualifiers, I did that (and I went to the sectionals!).  I wanted to do a HSPU to the floor, I did that.

My next goal is that the next competition I do to be more confident with all the movements.  That’s an ongoing thing I have to work on.  I have the right support at Arena to achieve this goal.

8. WHAT IMPACT HAS ARENA CROSSFIT HAD ON YOU IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

I think the biggest thing is the fact that I know I can’t do everything, but it has taught me that if I try I can.

9. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF?

Being skinny doesn’t make you healthy.  Your body needs to be nourished right through food and exercise so that it can function properly.  You only have one life so make it good!

10. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW TO CROSSFIT OR THINKING OF GIVING IT A TRY?

Don’t get overwhelmed if you walk into a CrossFit box and see people lifting heavy.  No one starts that way.  Give it a go, ask the coaches for the scaling options and take your time to learn the lifts and movements properly before you go heavy.  Oh and stretch your body!!

11. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?

I think the support and coaching you get at CrossFit far exceeds what I could get when I previously went to gyms.  Also the Olympic and power lifting I never would have thought I would be doing any of that!

12. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HOW HAS IT CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED CROSSFIT?

Pre CrossFit I had just lost a bit of weight, I was eating Paleo and continued to do so until I moved to Thailand.  Over the past year my diet relaxed a bit while I enjoyed the beautiful food of this country.  I have recently started a new eating program to help get rid of those kgs that have slipped on and also to help with my training.  It is great, timed eating around my workouts and I feel like I’m eating way more!  My food choices are back to the cleaner types of foods my body loves.

13. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE MAINSTREAM FITNESS ATTITUDE THAT BELIEVES WOMEN SHOULDN’T LIFT HEAVY WEIGHTS? OR IF SHE DOES, SHE WILL GET “BULKY”?

I think the attitude has changed over the past few years and there is a big empowerment over woman being all they can.  My daughter watched me handstand pushup at the

Asia Champs and she thought I was amazing, I also have found numerous videos on my phone taken by her of me lifting some heavy weights and she is proud.  That in itself just makes me turn away from anyone that has to critique a woman’s muscles.

There are still the groups out there that think that woman shouldn’t lift heavy, but they also think that CrossFit is dangerous.

14. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

Descending Ladder 10,9,8,7,6…..3,2,1

Deadlifts

Squat Cleans

Push Press

Pistol Squats

Double Unders (x3)

15. HOW HAS CROSSFIT MADE YOU FEEL MORE PREPARED FOR THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?

I’m pretty sure I can out row the zombies in a boat along the Khlongs. Could probably throw a few big logs at them too :)
